El Capitan (MacOS 10.11) Warnings

Warning 1: Installing El Capitan will break an existing NetHack installation.
The installation process moves files from /usr/games to /Library/SystemMigration/History/Migration-(some UUID)/QuarantineRoot/.

The installation is meant to go in /usr/games and fails because this directory is not available to non-Appleapplications under El Capitan.

  • Step 2: Mount

    If your browser did not mount the image, double-click on the downloadedfile and MacOS will mount the image and start the Installer.
  • Step 3: Install

    If the Installer has not started, double-click on the package file. TheMacOS X Installer programwill start and ask for the root password. The game will beinstalled under /usr/games and /Applications.

    If you will be running NetHack from the shell,edit the $PATH variable for your shell to include /usr/games/bin.

  • Step 4a: Run from the Command Line

    Run nethack in a Terminal window. The man pages are in /usr/games/manand the Guidebook is in /usr/games/doc.
